February is Technology Love Month!
One of my favorite technologies right now is texting. It is said that 82 million people text.
Text messaging, also known as “texting“, refers to the exchange of brief written messages between mobile phones over cellular networks. While the term most often refers to messages sent using the Short Message Service (SMS), it has been extended to include messages containing image, video, and sound content (known as MMS messages). Individual messages are referred to as “text messages” or “texts”. Wikipedia
Why Texting is a Favorite
I never thought that texting would be on my list of favorites. But now that my son is driving and my middle son will be driving soon too, I have the need to let go and let grow. So to stay sane I ask my son to text message me once he arrives at his destination. Texting itself may not be the actual favorite, it may be the peace of mind that the texting brings.
Texting
When my son gets to his destination I get a text (usually). When I first started texting I did not know any short, cute acronyms so I found some and posted them here. Over the past few months I have found that we really do not use all those fancy acronyms but it is nice to know what they mean.
Acronyms
Our most commonly used ones.
RU there? Used more then I would like to admit.
Sry Sorry- I get this when my son forgets to let me know he is there safely.
2 to, too, also
? R U?- Where are you?
rdy?- Ready?
Luv u
K-ok- really we do shorten that.
: ) – I like to use the smile a lot otherwise how do you real know the emotion of a text?
For a really long list of texting acronyms check this out.
All the acronyms are very simple. I have had to ask on a few and sometimes they were just typos.
My suggestion: Make it up as you go. It is like a new language for me and my kids.

I watched the Oprah show about texting and talking on the phone while driving. I found the most interesting (and scary) aspect was the fact that our brains cannot multi-task and visually take in everything in our driving view. See the link below for the researcher’s explanation.

No one is fully functioning while talking on a cell or texting while driving. The risk factor is the same for cell phone users as for drunk drivers and twice as high for texting while driving as for drunk drivers. Please don’t put lives at risk – the world won’t end if you don’t make that call or text, but you could end a life if you do.
Thank you for adding such wonderful input! Texting does give me piece of mind but only when I know it is not being done in the car.
Great article, Laura. Texting can really help moms stay connected with their kids while reducing some anxiety.
