Chandra of Scribendi Working Smart

by Laura on January 29, 2010

Thanks for returning!

In the past I had the chance to interview two winners of the  “Mom for Simplicity” online essay contest by HP: Barbara Schantz and Kimberly Friedman. Barbara had just started her business, Baby Dipper Bowl and shared how she utilizes social networks like twitter, facebook, linkedin, cell phone and email for her business!  While Kimberly took on the  DeMasiMiddleSchool by converting her PTA to an electronic PTA.

Last week I had the chance to interview another remarkable lady who by all accounts knows how to simplify life and get business done! Her thoughts on business and working smart to play more.

Scribendi

I talked via a phone conversation with Chandra K. Clarke Founder of Scribendi. Scribendi.com was founded in 1997 as one of the world’s first online editing and proofreading companies. Based in Ontario, Canada, the company’s primary goal was to provide clients with fast, informative, and affordable revision services. Today, Scribendi.com operates as one of the world’s leading document preparation services. In a highly fragmented industry, Scribendi.com provides clients with stability, honesty, and integrity. From term papers to business plans, Scribendi.com can help you handle all of your document preparation needs.

This company went from start up to a full thriving business. Being a past business owner I had some questions for Chandra.

Strategies?

Chandra says “decide what you want to accomplish“, “have very specific goals“, “this will help you get from point A to B“. Chandra had a plan. I have to agree with Chandra, having a plan will ultimately help you stay on course. But of course make sure there is wiggle room for the universe to tap its own expectations onto you. Also,  make a financial plan. Be specific. Do you want to make $100.00 in the first three months or 100,000 in the first year? Write these goals down and be specific about what you want to accomplish.

Clarifying Your Passion

Chandra is this your passion?

Writing is more of my passion then editing/proofreading. But, I could not count on writing. This has been fun.

Is your work your passion? Does your work need to be your passion or does it need to be the gateway to making enough money to be able to live your passionate life? Who decides? You do, of course!

How do You Get Everything Accomplished?

I do the pick three. I pick the top three things I need to accomplish then when those are done everything else is gravy.

I love this idea. So I am going to try it. I may try it with a twist. Three family goals. Three professional goals.

Would You Do anything Different?

Looking back, I would have brought more people on faster.

This seems like that rock and a hard place. You need people but you are not financially ready yet. What do you do? Talking with Chandra, hiring sooner would have been better. She could have lessened her load to bring in more clients. If you can lighten at least the part of your business you are not the greatest at and provide a job for someone else it may bring in a welcomed opportunity all around.

Technology

Today’s technology is different then when we started in 1997. It is easier to bring a product or business to market but it is harder because there are so many new tools.

I so hear what Chandra is saying. My business was Jakoter, a health organizer. There was no twitter, MySpace may have been around but that was for kids. Technology has made it easier to market. Yet it has also made it harder because there is so much more to market. Look at it any way you wish but I prefer… it is a whole new ball game and you just have to get out there.

Most Creative Marketing

Gain some free publicity by getting or entering contest like website design awards etc.

I would like to also add to go ahead and jump into twitter, facebook and all the social networking available.

Any Last Tips?

Stay sane. Enjoy what you are doing!

My tips…. enjoy your life and let your work flow through you but don’t forget to include financial goals.

I want to thank Chandra for the valuable tips. To clarify your future please download this Free Clarity PDF.
